Though the actual period of construction is unknown, the venerable Mishima Taisha Shrine has been recorded in books dating back to the Nara and Heian periods. The shrine palace is designated as a cultural asset, and the large osmanthus tree in the shrine is registered as a National Natural Treasure. The Mishima Summer Festival is held in conjunction with the Reisai festivals during August from the 15th through the 17th. On the last day of the Reisai, the Yabusame performance is held in which horse-back archers fire arrows at targets as a form of ceremony. This event attracts many visitors every year.
